I admit it, I sat out most of the Skype revolution. With landline and cellphone what more did I need? Until recently, that is, when I needed to have a meeting with someone using Skype and realized that my old Microsoft gaming headset really didn’t cut it. Enter the Logitech ClearChat USB.
That Microsoft headset was fine when fragging friends: Nobody can really understand you when you’re yelling at each other anyway. If you really need to understand the person you’re talking to and vice-versa, however, then you want something with a clear, high-quality microphone and speakers.
The quality of the microphone is readily apparent to the people on the other end of the connection. One remarked, “Wow! That’s the clearest microphone I’ve heard on Skype. It’s podcast quality.” Score one for Logitech. They also claim that they have “laser-tuned audio drivers,” which sounds like marketing mumbo-jumbo to me, but the speakers certainly sounded crisp and clear. If you use Skype a lot you and your callee will both enjoy the experience.
The audio quality was something of an accident, however; the feature I really liked was the control set integrated into one of the earpads. I never liked the volume and mute controls on the wire, I can never find them when I want them. With the ClearChat Pro you just tap your right ear to turn mute on and off, and twist the ring around the mute button to adjust volume. When muted the microphone shines a red LED that you can easily see in your peripheral vision, no more embarrassment when you throw some snarks out that were supposed to have been muted away.
Easy controls and nice feedback ... nice equipment. At $50 it’s not a cheap headset, but it’s good quality at a fair price. Recommended.
